Two centuries until we close the global gender gap

It will take us exactly 217 years to close global gender gap, if we continue on current trends.

According to the new publication of the World Economic Forum (WEF), the disparity between genders has widened for the first time since the institution started the study in 2006. If we continue on current trends, we will not be able to eliminate the 32% gap by year 2234.

The report is published annually since 2006 in joint efforts of scholars from WEF, Harvard, and Berkeley. Each time, the index focuses on gathering data from four main obstacles to gender parity, that is, economic participation and opportunity, education, political empowerment, and health and survival.

The study documents considerable achievement in the field of education and health-care assistance. From the perspective of these gander-gap dimensions, 95% and 96%, respectively, of the gap is already closed.

The real problems concern political empowerment, where the gap amounts to 23%, and economic disparity, where the global gap constitutes 42% and is the highest since 2008. The average annual pay for men in 2017 was $21,000, opposed to $12,000 for women.

  1. This is an extraordinary moment in global history. In the past only two children per woman reached adulthood if more had survived the population size would have not been stable. This also means that the extended family with many children, that we often associate with the past, was only a reality for glimpse in time. Only the few generations during the population boom lived in families with many children before and after two children are the norm. The future will resemble our past, except that the children are not dying, but are never born in the first place.
