It’s not by choice, says the UN in its annual report on world’s refugees.

“No one becomes a refugee by choice; but the rest of us can have a choice about how we help,” said yesterday UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.

In its annual publication ‘Global Trends’, released today on World Refugee Day, the UN Refugee Agency said record 68.5 million people were displaced as of the end of 2017. Among them were 16.2 million people who became displaced during 2017.

While the migrant issues hit headlines in Europe and North America, the report shows the crisis is more acute elsewhere, with 85% of world’s refugees hosted by developing regions.

“It should be an element dispelling the perception, the notion that is so prevailing in many countries: That the refugee crisis — singular — is a crisis of the rich world,” Grandi said. “It is not. It continues to be a crisis mostly of the poor world.”
